Demolition Derby Rules and Regulations
UPDATED 6-25-2008 The following is a list of rules and regulations for all SCMP Demolition Derby’s. These rules are set up for the safety of the drivers and for a competitive event. Not following these rules may lead to immediate disqualification before, during or after the event. Hit the refresh button to get the newest data.
Intent
- Each driver must fill out an entry blank-Entry blank will list class pay out and information.
- All rules and regulations will be enforced-SCMP reserves the right to approve or reject any or all entries or cars.
- Only one driver and one mechanic will be permitted in the staging area-No mechanics are allowed on the race track at ANY time.
- Arm Bands-All crew and racers MUST wear arm band at all times. Failure to show arm band can lead to disqualification. SCMP reserves the right to make you purchase another arm band if you do not supply one.
- Pre-race Vehicle Inspection-Driver and mechanic must be present during the pre-race vehicle inspection. Both driver and mechanic must also be present at the drivers meeting prior to the race. Roll call can occur and disqualification can occur if both mechanic and driver are not present.
- Entry Fees-Cash or money order only. No checks personal or business checks.
- Alcohol or Drugs-There is no alcohol or drugs allowed before, during or after the event anywhere in the facility or the pit area. Drivers or pit crews caught drinking or using drugs will be disqualified immediately and will be asked to leave the facility.
- Refunds-There are no refunds under any circumstances.
- Post Race Inspection-Each race vehicle is subject to post-race technical inspection prior to any pay out. Failure of a race vehicle during post race inspection forfeits winnings to promoter.
Driver Specifications
- Driver Age-Drivers must be 18 years of age or older and have a valid drivers license or state ID to race. This will be checked at the sign-in tent. Drivers 16 years and older are allowed to compete provided they have a notarized medical statement or release OR the parent is present.
- Drivers Must Supply Own Cars- SCMP will limit each driver to no more than 3 cars per night for all classes entered.
- Car/Driver-All cars and drivers must be present at least 1 hour before the scheduled drivers meeting.
- Waiver-All drivers, crew members, mechanics, family, friends or associates are required to sign a release and waiver of liability and indemnity agreement before entering the facility. Failure to do so results in immediate disqualification.
- Pre Entry-It is in your best interest to pre-enter for each event as there will be a car limit of 50 for each class. Drivers may enter all classes.
- Car Number-The number on your car must match the number on your pre-entry form or your registration form at the track. If it does not, we will disqualify the entry.
General Vehicle Specifications for all classes
- Numbers-White numbers mandatory 24” minimum in height. Numbers must be readable at the beginning of the event.
- Glass-All glass must be removed including windshields. No broken glass will be allowed at all. Broken glass can be cause for disqualification from the event if found in post race inspection.
- Chrome or Trim-All chrome or trim must be removed and will not be allowed. Chrome or trim can be cause for disqualification from the event if found in post race inspection.
- Air Bags-All air bags or other such safety devices must be removed. This includes any explosive devices. Failure to remove can be cause for disqualification from the event if found in post race inspection.
- Tires and Wheels-Must be stock sized tires. 4 ply only. Mud or snow tires are OK. No inner liner tires are allowed. Truck or light truck tires are allowed but must not be new tires. Inner tubes are OK. Tires can be filled with air only. No liquids or solids allowed in tires. No reinforcements on any kind allowed. Tires within tires are not allowed. Tires must be stock as produced with no alterations. All wheel balance weights MUST be removed. No wheel reinforcements are allowed. Wheels must be stock as produced. No wheel weights are allowed. No spoke or mag wheels allowed. Wheels must be factory stock or production wheels.
- Gas and Gas Tanks-Fuel level in tank cannot exceed 5 gallons before the event. Gas tanks can be relocated into the drivers compartment. Tanks relocated to the driver compartment must be located in the center of the driver’s compartment or on the driver’s side of center in the driver’s compartment. Fuel pumps are not allowed in the driver’s compartment. A maximum of 16 inches of fuel line is allowed in the driver compartment. Tanks are not allowed right of center in the drivers compartment when standing behind the race vehicle. Only unleaded gas allowed. Gas is subject to post race technical inspection. Hot fuel or any additives will not be allowed. High octane race fuel is not allowed.
- Battery-2 stock battery’s will be allowed. Battery may be moved into driver compartment area on passenger side floor board. Battery must be safely secured to the race vehicle floor with a minimum of two 5/16 bolts and straps. Maximum output of battery is 850 cold crank amps. No deep cell batteries allowed. No race car batteries allowed. Batteries must be stock replacements and cannot be altered in any way.
- Exhaust Systems-Exhaust systems may be removed or cut off aft the firewall.
- Hoods, door, trunks-Hood can be bolted down or wired down. No welded hoods are allowed. Hoods must be as produced from the factory with no reinforcements. A minimum 12 inch hole must be in the center of the hood for fire inspection. Trunk can be bolted down, wired down or welded. Doors must be chained shut, wired shut or welded shut. If doors/trunk are welded shut, a maximum of 3 six inch welds OR 6 three inch welds on vertical door seams are allowed. If driver side door comes open during the race, the vehicle will be disqualified. Driver side front door can be reinforced.
- Bumpers-No reinforcements are allowed on bumpers. Bumpers must be as produced from the factory. The center of each bumper must be no higher than 24” from the ground at the center of the bumper unless bumper has been shoved up and cannot be lowered. Welding of bumpers and bumper supports is OK.
- Drive train-Welded rear ends or differentials are acceptable. The rest of the drive train components must remain stock as produced from the factory.
- Radiators and Fans-Radiators must be free of all coolants and anti-freeze and back flushed prior to arriving at the event. Radiators can be filled with water only. No additional radiator reinforcements are allowed. Fan blades MUST be removed. Electric and slip clutch fan blades are allowed provided they have plastic fins. Vehicles not originally equipped with a slip clutch fan can add it.
- Safety-All safety features are subject to post race technical inspection and apply to heat races and features. Safety belts are mandatory. No removal of safety apparel during the race at all. Removal of safety equipment is an immediate disqualification. Helmet mandatory. Driver suit mandatory. We recommend. a steel pipe in the door to resist driver injury.
Race Rules
- Car movement-Drivers may move forward and backward. Deliberately ramming a driver in the driver side door will result in immediate disqualification.
- Starts-How the race is started is the sole discretion of the race director. Racers will be notified of the race starting procedure prior to the feature event. Races will be started with a horn and green flag.
- Time limit-Drivers must hit a live car within (2 minutes) or get disqualified.
- Possum and team work-Racers playing possum will be disqualified. If a race vehicle sits idle for 2 minutes, this is considered possum. Team work is grounds for disqualification. Team work will not be tolerated. Drivers who play possum or team work will be black flagged by the corner worker. Once you are black flagged, you must stop your vehicle.
- Heats and features-Each class will consist of a heat race and a feature race provided there are more than 10 race vehicles. Heat race and feature race structure may be changed by the race director at each event.
- Event payout-Feature payouts are for 1st, 2nd and 3rd place finishers for each class. Minimum amount of entries required to guarantee payout. If minimum amount of entries is not met, 100% of entry monies will be split between 1st, 2nd and 3rd place finishers for each class. Payout is at discretion of SCMP and the race director. At specific events, the fan favorite driver is eligible for a $100 prize. Other prizes and awards will be awarded depending on the event. Contact SCMP for more information.
- Vehicle removal-All vehicles and trash must be removed from the grounds no later than 11:00PM the same day of the event. Vehicle removal is your responsibility. Vehicles left at the facility will be charged storage per day of $15.
- Vehicle fire or injury-In the event of fire that is out of control, the horn will sound and the race will stop for safety workers to extinguish the fire. Safety of the racers and the event staff is paramount. In the event of racer injury, the horn will sound and the race will stop until the driver is safely removed and medical attention is given. During fire or injury, the race track will be under a red flag. The race will not continue until the red flag period is over, the horn sounds and the green flag is back out.
- Vehicle alterations-Any vehicles illegally altered between heats and features will be disqualified during post race tech inspection. Random pre-feature inspection will be done at the discretion of the race director.
- Winner-The last vehicle to make contact is considered the winner.
- Protest-There is a $50 protest fee. If you feel a competitor has violated the rules, you can pay the fee and have one (1) item inspected on the vehicle. Only one protest allowed per racer. No crew protests allowed. If you are right, you get your $50 back. If not, the race director keeps your $50.
Classes and Vehicles
4 Cylinder Classes
- Only 4 cylinder vehicles are allowed to race together. In event participation is low in the 4 cylinder class, 4 & 6 cylinders of similar size may be allowed to race together at the race directors discretion.
- Any 4 cylinder automobile, station wagon domestic or import is allowed. No trucks, hearses, ambulances, jeeps or convertibles are allowed. Vehicles with sun roofs are allowed as long as the sun roof is removed and the sun roof hole is welded shut with steel plate.
- Vehicle rules and specifications for the 4 cylinder class are listed in the General Vehicle Specifications Section.
- Maximum wheel base for 4 cylinder class is 99”. Measured from the center of the rear axle to the center of the front axle.
6 Cylinder Classes
- Only 6 cylinder vehicles are allowed to race together. In event participation is low in the 6 cylinder class, 4 & 6 cylinders of similar size may be allowed to race together at the race directors discretion.
- Any 6 cylinder automobile, station wagon domestic or import is allowed. No trucks, hearses, ambulances, jeeps or convertibles are allowed. Vehicles with sun roofs are allowed as long as the sun roof is removed and the sun roof hole is welded shut with steel plate.
- Vehicle rules and specifications for the 6 cylinder class are listed in the General Vehicle Specifications Section.
- Maximum wheel base for 6 cylinder class is 106”. Measured from the center of the rear axle to the center of the front axle.
8 Cylinder Classes
- Only 8 cylinder vehicles are allowed to race together. In event participation is low in the 6 cylinder class, 6 & 8 cylinder vehicles of similar size may be allowed to race together at the race directors discretion.
- Any 8 cylinder automobile, station wagon domestic or import is allowed. No Chrysler Imperials, trucks, hearses, ambulances, jeeps or convertibles are allowed. Vehicles with sun roofs are allowed as long as the sun roof is removed and the sun roof hole is welded shut with steel plate.
- Vehicle rules and specifications for the 8 cylinder class are listed in the General Vehicle Specifications Section.
- Maximum wheel base for 8 cylinder class is 112”. Measured from the center of the rear axle to the center of the front axle.
The above rules can be modified by SCMP for any event. Rules are subject to change. Rules are subject to change to fit an event.
